William Thompson (Iowa)

William Thompson (November 10, 1813 – October 6, 1897) was a politician from Iowa during its transition from territory to statehood.

He was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and settled in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He was a member of the Territorial house of representatives in 1843 and became secretary of the State constitutional convention in 1846. In 1847 he was elected to the US Congress, where he served for four years.

He then served in the Union Army during the Civil War and remained in the Army until he retired in 1875. He was also editor of the "Iowa State Gazette". Thompson died in Tacoma, Washington and was buried there.
