According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 1.1square mile s (3.0km² ), all of it land.Allerton was served by Iowa Highway 40 until it was turned over to Wayne County and made a county road.
Allertion was a division point on the
Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad until the bankruptcy of the line in 1980. The old Golden State Route from Allerton through Fairfield was abandoned. There had been talk of relaying the track from Allerton to Seymour on the old Rock Island right of way to provide a connection between the IC&E and the Union Pacific. This idea has since been dropped due to the objections of the adjacent landowners. The remaining line is now known asUnion Pacific 's Spine Line. It has seen a marked increase in traffic since the Chicago & Northwestern merger with Union Pacific. Passenger service was discontinued in 1968.Demographics

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 559 people, 231 households, and 155 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 490.4 people per square mile (189.3/km²). There were 287 housing units at an average density of 251.8/sq mi (97.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.28% White, 0.18% Asian, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.There were 231 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,929, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $23,854 versus $17,614 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $12,218. About 17.6% of families and 18.5% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 23.5% of those under age 18 and 15.0% of those age 65 or over.References
