Blakesburg is a city in Wapello County, Iowa, United States. The population was 374 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Blakesburg is located at coor dms|40|57|46|N|92|38|10|W|city (40.962817, -92.636044)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²), all of it land. The ZIP code for Blakesburg is 52536.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 374 people, 166 households, and 105 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,408.9 people per square mile (534.8/km²). There were 177 housing units at an average density of 666.8/sq mi (253.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.66% White, 0.53% Asian, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.

There were 166 households out of which 27.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.78.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,500, and the median income for a family was $35,417. Males had a median income of $27,813 versus $20,313 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,962. About 13.5% of families and 14.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.4% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.

Miscellaneous

The Eddyville-Blakesburg Community School District has two school buildings here, which are located in the same lot: Eddyville-Blakesburg Middle School, and Blakesburg Elementary Attendance Center. Blakesburg does not have a dedicated high school building, but students grades 9-12 attend at the Eddyville-Blakesburg High School in neighboring Eddyville.
