As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 325 people, 145 households, and 84 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,121.6 people per square mile (432.7/km²). There were 161 housing units at an average density of 555.6/sq mi (214.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.77% White, 0.62% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.There were 145 households out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% were non-families. 39.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 27.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,000, and the median income for a family was $43,281. Males had a median income of $27,344 versus $21,667 for females. The

The city is home to Spalding Catholic High School. It is known for its successful baseball program, the Spartans have won state championships in 1971, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1989, 2000, and 2001. They have also qualified for the state tournament multiple times since that last tournament. Their rival is Remsen St. Mary's, a school located 15 miles southwest.
