census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,796 people, 1,161 households, and 743 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,734.7 people per square mile (670.5/km²). There were 1,244 housing units at an average density of 771.8/sq mi (298.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.68% White, 0.21% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.22% of the population.There were 1,161 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.8% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 33.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 83.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,173, and the median income for a family was $43,882. Males had a median income of $31,403 versus $21,633 for females. The
