USS "Laurentia" (AF-44) was an sclass|Adria|stores ship acquired by the
U.S. Navy for service inWorld War II . Her task was to carry stores, refrigerated items, and equipment to ships in the fleet, and to remote stations and staging areas."Laurentia" was laid down under
Maritime Commission contract byPennsylvania Shipyards , Inc.,Beaumont, Texas ,23 October 1944 ; launched12 December 1944 ; sponsored by Mrs. Oscar Hayes; acquired by the Navy19 May 1945 for transfer toGalveston, Texas ; and commissioned5 June 1945 , Lt. John Janus in command.World War II service
After shakedown, "Laurentia" loaded frozen and refrigerated provisions at
Mobile, Alabama , and departed for thePacific Ocean 27 June . She reachedPearl Harbor 11 July ; discharged cargo; then sailed7 August to carry cold stores to American bases in the Marshalls, the Marianas, and thePalau s. She returned to Pearl Harbor28 September carrying 250 veterans of the Pacific fighting. After loading more cargo, she sailed for thePhilippines 6 October . She reachedTacloban ,Leyte , the 23d and supplied ships inLeyte Gulf until sailing for theUnited States 9 November . She arrivedSan Francisco, California ,2 December .Post-war activity
"Laurentia" stocked her cold storage holds and deployed for the
Far East 14 December . She reachedYokosuka ,Japan ,10 January 1946 . During almost the next 3 months she provisioned ships out of Yokosuka and supported occupation operations along the eastern coast ofHonshū . She then returned to theU.S. West Coast , arriving at San Francisco15 May .Assigned to the U.S. Army
Decommissioning there
18 June , she was returned to theWar Shipping Administration . On6 November the Maritime Commission transferred her to theU.S. Army underbareboat charter for supply operations in the Pacific.Assigned to MSTS
Reacquired by the Navy
1 July 1950 , "Laurentia" was assigned toMilitary Sea Transportation Service and reclassified T-AF-44. Manned by a civilian crew she operated in the Far East during theKorean conflict . Based atYokohama andKobe , Japan, she provisioned American ships in various Japanese ports and steamed the vital sea supply line between Japan andSouth Korea while carrying supplies toInchon andPusan . She continued this important duty until departing Yokohama for the United States27 February 1954 . Steaming via Pearl Harbor and thePanama Canal Zone , she reachedNew Orleans, Louisiana ,9 April . After loading provisions, she sailed10 May on a circular supply run to American bases in theCaribbean , principally to the Panama Canal Zone, theVirgin Islands , andPuerto Rico . Since1954 she maintained this pattern of operations out of New Orleans and Mobile, and she continued to serve in the Caribbean and theGulf of Mexico with MSTS.Decommissioning
"Laurentia" was placed out of service in 1970 and struck from the
Navy Vessel Register (date unknown). Final Disposition: broken up for scrapping in 1973.Military awards and honors
