Galveston (pronEng|gælˈvɛstən) is a town in Jackson Township, Cass County, Indiana, USA. The population was 1,460 at the 2006 census.

Geography

Galveston is located at coor dms|40|34|39|N|86|11|29|W|city (40.577496, -86.191327)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,532 people, 615 households, and 448 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,702.9 people per square mile (1,037.7/km²). There were 649 housing units at an average density of 1,145.0/sq mi (439.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.98% White, 0.33% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.33% Asian, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.37% of the population.

There were 615 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% were non-families. 23.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $45,450, and the median income for a family was $48,942. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $24,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,880. About 3.4% of families and 4.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.6% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.

Transportation

Two airports are near Galveston in unincorporated Cass County.

Galveston Airport, publicly owned, is open for public use. Rockey's Air Strip is a privately-owned airport for private use.
