USS Escalante (AO-70) was a built for the
United States Navy duringWorld War II . She was the only U.S. Navy ship named for theEscalante River inUtah .History
"Escalante" (AO-70), formerly SS "Shabone", was constructed for the
Maritime Commission by the Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point Shipyard, Inc.,Sparrow's Point, Maryland , in1942 and sponsored by Mrs. Walter E. Than. She was acquired by the Navy and commissioned on30 January 1943 , Lieutenant Commander C. L. Bolton,USNR , in command.After a brief shakedown cruise in the
Chesapeake Bay area, she transported a cargo ofaviation gasoline fromHouston, Texas , to thePanama Canal Zone . She was then assigned to duty with the Atlantic Fleet, withTask Force s 60 and 61. Between May1943 and30 October 1944 she made six trips toNorth Africa and two toUnited Kingdom ports where she fueled ships for theNormandy invasion ."Escalante" returned to
Norfolk Navy Yard for overhaul to fit her for duty in the Pacific. On4 December 1944 she loaded fuel atAruba , passed through thePanama Canal and arrived atPearl Harbor on26 December . She reported toService Squadron 10 to operate mainly fromUlithi in refueling units of theU.S. 3rd Fleet and theU.S. 5th Fleet at sea and thereby taking part in the action againstLuzon ,Iwo Jima ,Okinawa and the Japanese homeland. From26 September 1945 until20 October she fueled ships inTokyo Bay and then set sail forSan Francisco, California , arriving on31 October .She was placed out of commission on
12 December 1945 and transferred to theMaritime Commission for disposal.Awards and honors
