Triple fisherman's knot

Knot-details
name=Triple Fisherman's Knot
type=bend
origin=Modern
related=Fisherman's knot, Double fisherman's knot, Double overhand knot, Strangle knot
releasing=Jamming
strength=high
caveat=Difficult to untie
uses=Joining thin, stiff or slippery lines, particularly UHMWPE (Spectra or Dyneema) cord
The triple fisherman's knot is used in climbing for tying ends of slippery, stiff cord such as Spectra and Dyneema. In these types of cord, the traditional double fisherman's knot tends to slip. The triple fisherman's, having an extra loop, has higher friction and holds better in these types of cord.

Tying the triple fisherman's knot is nearly identical to the double fisherman's knot, except for a third wrap around before passing the end through.

Dyneema/Spectra's very high lubricity leads to poor knot holding ability, and has led to the recommendation to use the triple fisherman's knot rather than the traditional double fisherman's knot in 6mm Dyneema core cord to avoid a particular failure mechanism of the double fisherman's, where first the sheath fails at the knot, then the core slips through. The triple fisherman's knot should not be confused with the triple-T fisherman's knot [ [http://www.gudelius.de/spst.htm Triple-T Fisherman's knot testing (German/English)] ]
