History
Makri was ruled by the Ottoman Empire as "Miri" until the Balkan Wars of 1913. Having invaded the area, Bulgaria administered the area until the Greco-Turkish War, after which it was finally ceded to Greece. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt. Some of its residents moved to other parts of Greece and North America. The population dramatically dropped between 1981 and 2001.
Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s.
Makri was battered by heavy rainfall on Monday August 6, 2007 and flooded the area and its village, its beaches were unsafe and muddy. Off the Thracian Sea by the coasts of Makri by its campground and beach, a trailer floated as far as 1 km away from the seashore. Some properties were damaged and several roads were closed.
