Lava Hot Springs is a city in Bannock County, Idaho, United States. It is part of the 'Pocatello, Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area'. The population was 521 at the 2000 census. Located in the mountainous valley of the Portneuf River the old route of the Oregon Trail and California Trail, the city has become popular resort location, noted for its numerous hot springs amenable to bathing.

Geography

Lava Hot Springs is located at coor dms|42|37|10|N|112|0|51|W|city (42.619482, -112.014283)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), all of it land.

Recreation

Lava Hot Springs' Olympic Swimming Pool features two Water Slides, 2 Swimming Pools, 7 Diving Boards, 3 Diving Platforms and our pool Gator.

Bubbling out of natural underground springs, the hot water is laden with Minerals, but has no sulfur and therefore no bad odor. Over 3 million gallons a day course through the springs and are diverted into the Portneuf River keeping the springs ever changing and clean. The spring's temperatures range from approximately 105˚ to 112˚ degrees.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 521 people, 232 households, and 125 families residing in the city. The population density was 730.7 people per square mile (283.3/km²). There were 309 housing units at an average density of 433.4/sq mi (168.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.93% White, 1.15% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 1.34% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.30% of the population.

There were 232 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.7% were non-families. 39.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,472, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $38,125 versus $20,313 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,242. About 16.7% of families and 25.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.6% of those under age 18 and 10.5% of those age 65 or over.
