Fayetteville is a city in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. The population was 11,148 at the 2000 Census. Census Estimates of 2005 indicate a population of 14,363. The city is the county seat of Fayette CountyGR|6. Fayetteville is located approximately 22 miles from the city of Atlanta. Demographics

As of the 2000 CensusGR|2, there were 11,148 people, 4,338 households, and 2,967 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,126.7 people per square mile (435.2/km²). There were 4,572 housing units at an average density of 462.1/sq mi (178.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.44% White, 13.97% African American, 0.22% Native American, 3.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.78% of the population.

There were 4,338 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48, and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population age was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $55,208, and the median income for a family was $62,133. Males had a median income of $43,949 versus $35,035 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,551. About 2.4% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.1% of those under age 18 and 8.8% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Fayetteville is served by the Fayette County School System.

Fayette County High School, Whitewater High School, and Starr's Mill High School serve the Fayetteville area.

Also, Whitewater Middle School and Fayette Middle School, Bennetts Mill Middle School and Rising Starr Middle School serve the city residents.

Spring Hill Elementary, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, Cleveland Elementary, and Hood Avenue Primary and Fayetteville Intermediate serve the Fayetteville area as elementary schools.

Points of Interest

The Fayette County Courthouse, built in 1825, only four years after the county and town's founding, is the oldest surviving courthouse in Georgia. The courthouse sits in the center of the Fayetteville town square and today houses the local chamber of commerce and the [http://www.fayettega.org/ Fayette County Development Authority] .

The Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House, built in 1855 by John Stiles Holliday, uncle of the western gambler John Henry "Doc" Holliday.

The Margaret Mitchell Library, built in 1948, is today the home of the Fayette County Historical Society and houses Civil War and genealogical records.
