(Verreaux & Verreaux, 1851)The Gabon Woodpecker (Dendropicos gabonensis) is a species of bird in the Picidae family. It is found in Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Uganda.
The form lugubris, breeding from Sierra Leone east to Nigeria, is sometimes split (e.g. by Handbook of the Birds of the World) as a separate species, the Melancholy Woodpecker, Dendropicos lugubris.
