Raiford is a town in Union County, Florida, United States. The population was 187 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 193 [http://www.census.gov/popest/cities/tables/SUB-EST2004-04-12.xls] .

Geography

Raiford is located at coor dms|30|3|46|N|82|14|13|W|city (30.062892, -82.236999)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 187 people, 68 households, and 48 families residing in the town. The population density was 356.7 people per square mile (138.8/km²). There were 76 housing units at an average density of 145.0/sq mi (56.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 83.42% White, 14.97% African American, 1.07% Native American, and 0.53% from two or more races.

There were 68 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.46.

In the town the population was spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 83.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $33,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $32,708 versus $22,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,684. About 34.0% of families and 36.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.2% of those under the age of eighteen and 29.4% of those sixty five or over.

Additional info

Raiford is also where Florida State Prison is located. The penitentiary encompasses over fifty acres (200,000 m²). This prison was shown in an episode of the 1960s television series The Fugitive.

The town's prison is also the subject of the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Four Walls of Raiford".
