(BBC) France issues arrest warrants for two Djibouti officials that interfered with investigations after the assassination of a French judge there. Djibouti doesn't recognize the warrants.(BBC) October 4, 2006 (Wednesday) Lesotho marks 40 years of independence with a new flag, incorporating the traditional Basotho hat. (Reuters) October 7, 2006 (Saturday) The government of Gabon's El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba is under pressure following revelations about plans to sell the islet Mbiane to neighbouring Equatorial Guinea.[1] The two nations' dispute about oil-rich territories in the Gulf of Guinea was hoped to be resolved this week during a meeting chaired by Kofi Annan, which was cancelled on short notice by Omar Bongo. The Gabonese newspaper L'Echo du Nord was shut down after reporting about apparent plans to sell the islet as Omar Bongo, "...for the first time since he came to power in 1967, sees his position threatened by a popular movement, which could soon force him to dismiss his government." (afrol News [2]) The Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front has retained two seats in byelections to the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe, in the constituencies of Chikomba and Rushinga. October 9, 2006 (Monday) Supreme Islamic Courts Council of Somalia declare Jihad against Ethiopia.(Reuters) October 10, 2006 (Tuesday) A Couple is caught having sex in a mosque during Ramadan in Gilgil, Kenya, and are sentenced to 18 months in prison.(Khaleej Times) October 23, 2006 (Monday) The Zambian government has announced that microbial analysis of samples taken from Chavuma and Zambezi provinces have confirmed the presence of oil and gas deposits.
