December 30, 2006 (Saturday) - Antoine Gizenga, the 81 year old "patriarch" of Congolese politics, and leader of the left-wing Unified Lumumbist Party (French: Parti Lumumbiste Unifié or PALU), was appointed Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, by newly and democratically elected President Joseph Kabila, following a pre-electoral agreement between the two politicians' political parties. Gizenga will be the first Prime Minister appointed under the new Congolese constitution, which allowed the installation of the first democratically elected, multiparty legislature since 1965, and the first ever President democratically elected by direct suffrage.
