During the recent years, Macclenny has been growing considerably, thus resulting in many more dineries and other places of consumer spending. The Wal-Mart Supercenter made its way into Macclenny in late January 2007, and popular coffee chain Starbucks quickly followed suit. Other popular places include, but are not limited to, McDonald's, Woody's, Burger King, Taco Bell, CVS Pharmacy, Little Caesar's, and other popular places of purchase.
Culture
The small city of Macclenny has been described by locals as a small, Southern community. The city of Macclenny has its roots in Christianity, with some churches as old as one hundred and twenty-five years old.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 4,459 people, 1,548 households, and 1,140 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,354.9 people per square mile (523.3/km²). There were 1,644 housing units at an average density of 499.5/sq mi (192.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.89% White, 21.87% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.47% of the population.There were 1,548 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 20.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 12.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,895, and the median income for a family was $37,091. Males had a median income of $26,775 versus $19,573 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $14,909. About 17.1% of families and 20.9% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 37.4% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.References
