- Shide, Isle of Wight
Shide is a small settlement on the
Isle of Wight , some of which is considered to be in the Newport conurbation. TheShide Hill House which was located here was the retirement home of ProfessorJohn Milne (1850-1913), inventor of the horizontalpendulum seismograph after he retired from theImperial College of Engineering inTokyo, Japan . TheIsle of Wight County Cricket Ground is just south of Shide.There is a cycleway between Shide and Merstone, and public transport is provided by
Southern Vectis buses on route 2, route 3 and local route 38.hide Quarry
Shide Quarry, located to the east of the village is a
Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Local Nature Reserve owned by the County Council. The site was notified in 1971 for its biological features which show all stages of succession from barechalk rock to Ash woodland. It is one of 41 SSSIs on the Isle of Wight.References
