United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 83.0km² (32.0 sq mi). 31.9 square miles (82.5 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²) of it (0.59%) is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 26,448 people, 10,384 households, and 7,040 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 830.5 people per square mile (320.6/km²). There were 11,721 housing units at an average density of 368.1/sq mi (142.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.93% White, 31.00% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 1.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 10,384 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 18.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,343, and the median income for a family was $37,157. Males had a median income of $35,204 versus $21,731 for females. The
