Dekalb Academy of Technology and Environment is a charter school in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The school has about 530 students in kindergarten through eighth grade (as of the 2010-2011 school year). In October 2008, Kathy Cox has recognized the school as a top 10 school in georgia for math and science. The school has a goal to be recognized as one of the top 10 charter schools in the nation.[citation needed]. Academics

The mission of the school is to give its students a background in technology and study of the environment by engaging in environmental projects. Technology supports all core learning areas. The specials of the week for every class are Technology, Spanish, Music, Art, and Physical Education. The school has a special Discovery Gifted Program for those who have been identified as gifted. The school band consists of three levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The school band is for grades 5th-8th. The band (The Big Green Sound Machine) takes part in many activities like parades, performances, and competitions.They took silver 2nd place in a regional band competition on April 25, 2009. Specialized academic programs include the Scotts Foresman Reading Program and Everyday Mathematics math curriculum, and the UCSMP mathemactics program.

Clubs

The school's clubs include the National Beta Club (Junior Beta), Technology Club (DAtech club) , Spanish Club ( El Circulo Espanol) , and Girl Scouts of the USA (brownies, Daises and Juniors,), Recycling Club, and Boy Scouts of America 1833 (Boy Scouts and cub scouts tiger cub and junior cub).Ever since 2007, the school is now participating in an Atlanta Area sports program which includes Basketball, American football , Softball, Track, and Cheerleading, which is all co-ed. The school is very happy and hopes to make it successful. This year the school also have a new, news team which consists of the Newspaper club and the broadcasting club. The news broadcasting team consist of many people, which includes the anchor Kelsey Martin/"Kitty cat Kelsey" Mr. Chaddrick Owes, the Dean of Students and Director of Technology for the school is the (Executive Director) for the team. Mr. Chad Owes is responsible for putting together this team and training each member of the team. Each of the students are very successful in the academics program and had been carefully selected. These clubs are extracurricular activities, and participating students must have a grade-point average of at least 3.3.

Setting

The school grounds suggest the school's connection to the study of the environment and features a large garden of flowers and vegetables and a pond containing fish, beavers, turtles, and other aquatic organisms. These features are often incorporated into academic activities. The school consists of growing flowers, berries, and vegetables each week for every class. The setting of the school grounds is not exactly your typical school ground. Each class has a recycling bin to recycle paper and plastic. To link with technology, every classroom has an electronic interwrite smartboard. This is considered a "21 century classroom". Also there are computers in every classroom. The school also owns Dell laptops for students to use during classroom instruction.

Building Features of the school include, 5 acres (20,000 m2) of ample room, 200 parking lots, 2 separate entrances, 40 classrooms, gymnasium, 2 cafeterias, a teacher lounge, a student lounge, plenty of computer labs and science labs, and a state of the art media center. These features are important for the students for their extracurricular activities that they participate in.
