Tōkai Nuclear Power Plant
- Tōkai Nuclear Power Plant
The nihongo|Tōkai Nuclear Power Plant|東海発電所|Tōkai hatsudensho|Tōkai NPP was the first Nuclear Electric plant in Japan and is still producing electricity by means of a modern plant at the site. It is located in Tokai in the Naka District in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan and operated by the Japan Atomic Power Company.
Reactors on Site
Unit 1
This reactor was built based on British developed Magnox technology.
This will be the first nuclear reactor to be decommissioned in Japan. The experience in decommissioning this plant is expected to be of great use in the future since Japan will certainly have many more plants to be decommissioned in the future. Below is a brief time line associated with the process.
*1998-3-31 Stop of operations
*2001-3 Finish of moving the nuclear fuel off site
*2001-10-4 Announcement of decommissioning plan
*2001-12 Beginning of process - spent fuel pool is cleaned
*2003 The turbine room and electric generator are taken down
*Fall 2004 Dismantling of the fuel moving crane
*2011 Dismantling of the reactor itself
Unit 2
This BWR was the first nuclear reactor built in Japan to produce over 1000 MW of electricity. By some formalities in the paperwork, the unit is technically separate from the rest of the nuclear facilities at Tokai-mura, but it is managed with the rest of them and even shares the same front gate. The power produced at the unit is sold by both the Tokyo Electric Company and the Tohoku Electric Company.
