Toronto ,Ontario ,Canada . It is at 2190Yonge Street atEglinton Avenue West/East, and was opened in1954 . It has two tracks, north and southbound, and a central platform. It is one of the larger stations on the
Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), and several shops are located inside includingCinnabon . Nearby landmarks include theTVOntario studios, Eglinton Park, the Yonge-Eglinton Centre, and Canada Square. This station is used as a switchover point for subways operators who are coming off or coming on their shift. There are sometimes slight delays at this station as subway operators are being changed.
Parts of the Canada Square complex are built directly over the station. North of the station, the line changes to bored tunnel with cut-and-cover tunnel at stations. It swings to the right to run directly under Yonge Street again.
In 2004, the station's old bus transfer area (where each route had a stand, and there was a blinking light at the bottom of the staircase to signify that a bus had arrived) was put out of service. It was replaced with a bus terminal converted from a bus maintenance building directly south of the old transfer area. The facility now offers wheelchair access and all platforms are in a
carbon monoxide monitored area.Eglinton was the northern terminus of the original
1954 subway line. It is also the only one of the original Yonge stations to retain itsVitrolite tiling scheme. On
April 23 2007 , TTC employee Antonio Almeida was killed in the tunnel just north of the station when a platform on their work car dislodged. [ [http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2007/04/23/worker-death.html Toronto transit worker dies in subway tunnel accident ] ]Surface connections
