- TTC accessibility
Handicap
accessibility on theToronto Transit Commission (TTC) system is limited but improving. As is true for mostmass transit systems, most of theToronto subway and RT was built beforewheelchair access was a requirement. However, all new subway stations built since1996 are equipped with elevators, and elevators have been installed in 23 stations built before 1996, including one station that was expanded in 2002, Sheppard-Yonge). A total of 28 out of Toronto's 69 subway andScarborough RT stations are accessible (Spadina is only accessible on the Bloor-Danforth line). Furthermore, 126 of the TTC's 167 bus routes (including community and night bus routes) are accessible as ofJune 22 ,2008 . Currently, the TTC's streetcar network is not accessible; however, the fleet is planned to be gradually replaced with modern, low-floor vehicles in the near future.ubway and RT
Accessible stations are equipped with elevators, wide fare gates, and accessible doors. Elevators are frequently out of service; the TTC provides a phone number, 416-539-LIFT, which provides a recorded message listing any elevators which are out of service.

However, St. Clair West station has an elevator at the Heath Street exit, but the station is not considered accessible.

109 of the TTC's 145 daytime bus routes are accessible as of August 31, 2008, using low-floor or lift-equipped buses. Not all stops along an accessible route are accessible (in particular, many subway stations where buses terminate are not accessible). Accessible buses are sometimes seen on non-accessible routes, but the TTC does not maintain a list of routes for which some trips are accessible.

The TTC streetcar system is not accessible, as its CLRV and ALRV streetcars are high-floor. However, it is planned that the streetcar fleet will gradually be replaced with modern, low-floor vehicles which will be wheelchair accessible.
Visually Impaired
Service animals are allowed on the TTC during all hours of operation, but must be kept under control at all times. All stations have yellow warning strips with bumps at the edge of the platforms. All buses and streetcars have both; automated visual and audible stop announcements, while the subway trains only have audible automated stop announcements. In
October 2007 , theOntario Human Rights Commission announced that all public transit operators across Ontario are expected to start calling out all stops.Wheel-Trans
The TTC provides
Wheel-Trans , a door-to-door accessible transit service, to people who are unable to use the conventional transit system. In many cases, Wheel-Trans buses connect with accessible subway stations.External links
