List of ships in Pirates of the Caribbean

"Black Pearl"

The "Black Pearl" is the fastest ship in the Caribbean, able to outrun the "Flying Dutchman", although only with the wind. It is also known as the "Ship with Black Sails". Captained by pirate Jack Sparrow, the "Pearl" fell under First Mate Hector Barbossa's command after a mutiny, although Sparrow resumed command following Barbossa's death. However, it changes possession several more times over the course of "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End", and it is last seen back under the resurrected Barbossa's control. At the conclusion of "Dead Man's Chest's", a "Dutchman" crewman remarks, "a captain always goes down with his ship," as the Kraken drags Sparrow and the Pearl to Davy Jones' Locker. Both Sparrow and Barbossa refer to themselves as the Pearl's 'captain', even when neither is in command.

The ship was originally named the "Wicked Wench" (the name of a ship on the Pirates of the Caribbean theme park ride) while in service to the East India Trading Company. Beckett ordered it sunk after its captain, Jack Sparrow, refused to deliver slave cargo. Sparrow petitioned Captain Davy Jones to raise the vessel from the ocean depths, and rechristened it, "Black Pearl". In exchange for being captain for thirteen years, Sparrow agreed to serve aboard Jones' ship, the "Flying Dutchman", for one hundred years.

The "Flying Dutchman" under Davy Jones

A mythic ship, the "Flying Dutchman" is commanded by the legendary Captain Davy Jones. Jones and his crew, like the ship itself, are slowly losing their humanity and mutating into conglomerates of different sea life forms. Both Jones and the ship were made immortal by the sea goddess, Calypso, in exchange for serving as psychopomp and ushering the souls of those who died at sea to the next world. Jones, however, eschewed his duties and made the "Flying Dutchman" the most feared ship on the seas. Afterwards, he either recruits dying survivors for his crew or executes them, dumping their bodies in the sea.

The "Flying Dutchman"' has powerful armaments, consisting of rotating tri-barreled guns capable of repeating fire.

When Captain Will Turner returns from the Netherworld ten years later, the once-decaying ship has been transformed back into an elegant galleon.

"Interceptor"

Pirates of the Caribbean ship
name = HMS "Interceptor"

captained by = Formerly:
James Norrington
Temporarily:
Jack Sparrow
Anamaria
ship type = Brig
weapons = 16 guns + 2 swivel guns
appearances =

The HMS "Interceptor" is the fictional ship that appeared in the 2003 film "". The "Interceptor" is portrayed by the tall ship "Lady Washington", a full-scale replica of the real "Lady Washington", an 18th century sloop that was later refitted as a brig. More information about it is on the "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" Collector's Edition DVD featurette called "Diary of a Ship". While the "Interceptor" was a real tall ship, the other two vessels were fakes; the "Dauntless" was a barge with an outer wooden shell simulating a ship, and the "Black Pearl" was both a set on barge and a set on land. A floating (non-authentic) "Pearl" was built for the second and third movies. In displacement vessels, hull speed increases with waterline length. Since the "Interceptor"/"Lady Washington" is, in reality a relatively small boat she has a hull speed of around 10 knots.

In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl she is hailed as the fastest ship in the Caribbean, the "HMS Interceptor" is first seen when Jack Sparrow attempts to board it (with the intention of stealing it) while most of the Royal Navy is attending Commodore James Norrington's promotion ceremony. After Will Turner frees him from prison, Jack schemes to commandeer the "Interceptor" by pretending to hijack Norrington's command ship, the "Dauntless". His plan works out well in the end and he heads off with the ship. Will and Jack recruit a new crew in Tortuga after Will gives the "Interceptor" to Anamaria. They arrive at Isla de Muerta and after a series of events engage in a fight with the Black Pearl. The "Interceptor" is sunk after the battle.

The "Interceptor" is armed with twelve 6-pound main deck guns, six on deck and six in the cabin, and four 2-pound guns on the poop deck (the high deck with the steering wheel). Along with the sixteen main guns, it also has two small swivel guns on the poop deck. Her full broadside contains 9 cannonballs and weighs 41 lbs. (18.597 kg).

In Other Media

The "Interceptor" was one of the ships that could be ridden in "Kingdom Hearts II". In the game, it was destroyed by Luxord and his Nobody troops in an attempt to eliminate Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Jack Sparrow.

"Edinburgh Trader"

Pirates of the Caribbean ship
name = Edinburg Trader

ship type = Merchant
captained by = Captain Bellamy
weapons = 4 Cannons
appearances =
A ship crewed by superstitious merchant seamen upon which Elizabeth Swann stows away after escaping Lord Cutler Beckett. Playing upon the crew's fears and the captain's repressed desire to trade in Tortuga (due to the East India Company's monopoly on all other ports), she uses her wedding dress to mimic a ghost, deceiving the crew into believing that the ship is haunted. They then want the captain to sail to Tortuga to appease the spirit. Later, Will, fleeing from Davy Jones, finds refuge aboard the "Trader", but the "Flying Dutchman" finds them and Davy Jones summons the Kraken to attack the ship, killing most of the crew. Will escapes by stowing back aboard the "Dutchman", but Jones' crew slaughter the other survivors.

HMS "Dauntless"

Pirates of the Caribbean ship
name = Dauntless

ship type = Ship-of-the-line
captained by = Lieutenant Gillette
weapons = 100 Cannons
appearances =
Although it is not known for speed, the Royal Navy's "HMS Dauntless" is considered the power in the Caribbean. Indeed, just its name instills fear among pirates, as its enormous size and even more enormous firepower are renowned across the Caribbean.

It is first seen bringing the new governor, Weatherby Swann and his young daughter, Elizabeth Swann to Port Royal. Known sailors on board at the time included Joshamee Gibbs and then-Lieutenant James Norrington. Coming upon a wrecked vessel, young Will Turner is found among the floating debris, the only survivor of a pirate attack. He is put under Elizabeth's care for the remainder of the journey. It was while on board the "Dauntless" that Elizabeth first glimpsed the "Black Pearl" as it vanished into the mist.

Eight years later, the "Black Pearl" slips past the "Dauntless" during the night and attacks Port Royal in search of an ancient Aztec coin. The "Dauntless" appears unresponsive during the battle, possibly because it was caught off guard or the crew feared causing further damage to Port Royal.

The "Black Pearl" escapes with the captive Elizabeth aboard. Dissatisfied with Commodore Norrington's rescue plan, Will strikes a deal with pirate Jack Sparrow to save her. In a brilliant ruse, Sparrow successfully commandeers the Interceptor by pretending to hijack "Dauntless". When the "Interceptor" pulls alongside the "Dauntless", Norrington and his men rush aboard the ship to apprehend the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Jack and Will swing over to the now unmanned "Interceptor" and set sail, leaving Norrington's disabled command ship stranded in the harbor.

The "Dauntless" searches for the "Interceptor", but has no luck finding it or the "Black Pearl" until a huge smoke plume is spotted arising from a deserted island. Sparrow and Elizabeth, marooned there by Barbossa, are rescued. Although the "Interceptor" has been sunk, Elizabeth persuades Governor Swann and Commodore Norrington to go to Isla de Muerta to find the "Black Pearl" and save Will. With Sparrow's guidance, the "Dauntless" heads to the mysterious uncharted island.

Norrington and his men wait offshore in longboats while Jack enters the cave to negotiate with Barbossa. In a ploy to win Barbossa's trust, Jack offers him the "Dauntless" as the foundation for his own fleet. Barbossa agrees and sends his crew to attack the navy. Jack expects them to be ambushed by Norrington's men as they row out to the "Dauntless". Instead, the undead pirates walk underwater and infiltrate the ship from below. When he realizes it is under attack, Norrington and his men rush back to fight the pirates. Through the actions of Will, Jack, and Elizabeth while they are in the cave, the curse is lifted and the now-mortal pirates are defeated and Barbossa is killed.

"Empress"

Pirates of the Caribbean ship
name = Empress

ship type = Junk
captained by = Sao Feng / Elizabeth Turner
weapons = 15 Cannons
appearances =
The "Empress" is commanded by Captain Sao Feng. The ship has red sails and has a greenish coloured deck. Its armament is 15 heavy iron laden guns shaped like a dragon with the gun protruding from the dragon's mouth. The vessel also has a spacious captain's cabin. It is first seen when Sao Feng captures the "Black Pearl". After being mortally wounded when the "Flying Dutchman" attacks the "Empress", Sao Feng passes the captaincy (and his status as one of the Pirate Lords) on to Elizabeth Swann, under the mistaken belief that she is Calypso, goddess of the sea. The "Empress" is captured by the "Flying Dutchman", and the crew is locked in the brig. However they are freed by James Norrington (who dies helping them escape) and escape to the towed "Empress" which escapes from the dutchman whilst it's crew try to rid it of the East India Trading Company soldiers.The "Empress" later arrives at Shipwreck Island and is seen during the final battle.

HMS "Endeavour"

Pirates of the Caribbean ship
name = Endeavour

ship type = Ship-of-the-line
captained by = Cutler Beckett
weapons = 106 Cannons
appearances =
The ship at the disposal of Lord Cutler Beckett, a powerful and unscrupulous East India Trading Company agent. It appears to be the same class ship as "HMS Dauntless", although it has additional guns on the main deck, bringing its count to over 100. When ex-Commodore James Norrington presented the heart of Davy Jones to Lord Beckett to bargain back his naval career, Beckett gained control over Jones and his ship, "Flying Dutchman", empowering Beckett to rule the world's oceans. Jones' heart was placed with with Beckett aboard "Endeavour", but Admiral Norrington and his officers later return it to the "Flying Dutchman" to be held at gunpoint to coax Jones into being more obedient.

While Norrington and his men join forces with Jones on the "Flying Dutchman", Beckett with his henchman Mercer, and East India Trading Company officers remain on the "Endeavour". Also aboard " Endeavour" is Governor Weatherby Swann, who was forced into serving Beckett to save his daughter, Elizabeth Swann.

Meanwhile, Will Turner makes a deal with Lord Beckett and Captain Sao Feng to capture Jack Sparrow and turn him over to Sao in exchange for Will becoming captain of the "Black Pearl". When Jack is brought to Lord Beckett on board the "Endeavour", Beckett offers Jack an opportunity to work for the East India Trading Company.

During the final battle in "At World's End", the "Flying Dutchman" sinks in the maelstrom. As the "Black Pearl" turns to challenge the "Endeavour", the "Flying Dutchman" resurfaces, under its new captain, Will Turner's command, and also turns to face off against Lord Beckett. The stunned Beckett is unable to command, and the "Black Pearl" and the "Flying Dutchman" open fire on "Endeavour". Beckett's second-in-command gives the order to abandon ship just before "Endeavour" erupts in explosions, in fact a great rarity.

The "Endeavour" is a first-rate Ship of the Line, a heavily-armed naval vessel used by the British Navy in the 17th-18th centuries. It bears close resemblance to the HMS Victory.

When Jack Sparrow and the Brethren Court came to fight to protect Shipwreck Island, Beckett brought more than 300 ships in the open ocean at his disposal. Obviously outnumbering the pirates' ships. The Brethren Court were doomed. The fleet contains at least all types of the battleship genre, including the East Indian. The Flying Dutchman served as the flagship and the HMS Endeavour as the secondary flagship.

That one," pointing to the "Interceptor". A surprised Jack responds, "What one? That one? Aye, that one. What say you?!" However, "Interceptor" is later sunk during a battle with the Black Pearl.

"Princess"

Pirates of the Caribbean ship
name =Princess

shipe type = unspecified
captained by = unnamed
weapons = unknown
appearances =
The "Princess" is a British merchant ship that sailed from England to Jamaica. It was destroyed by an explosion, and the sole survivor, Will Turner is rescued by the "HMS Dauntless". There are two possible reasons for the disaster, either an explosion in the powder magazine or an attack by the "Black Pearl". Which of these two possibilities is the truth was explained neither in the movie nor in the commentaries; the scriptwriters especially mentioned that this remains an unresolved question. Although, it is most likely that it was attacked by the "Black Pearl" in its search for the cursed gold as the ship is seen moments later by the young Elizabeth Swann disappearing into a fog bank.
