Gameplay

Key features of the game include the ability to create pirates, own and sail ships in combat, and complete quests for gold coins, which are the game's currency, gain notoriety (the game's experience system), and use unique weapons and treasure items.

There are various weapons to learn, and various skills to master in the game for each weapon. Currently, character leveling tops out at level 40, and skills max out at level 25, so only a fixed number of skill points (26) can be assigned to the skills in game. On September 25, 2008, it became possible to reassign skill points for different weapons (although this is still only on the test servers). [ [http://apps.pirates.go.com/pirates/v3/#/news/currentnews.html (September 25, 2008) "Reassign skill points for weapons"] ]

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded through purchase shops and quests found in the game. This is done to keep players from maxing all of the skills on one pirate, and encourages players to create new pirates with different attributes (unlimited players can make 4 pirates, and limited players can make 2).

The Cutlass: This is the first weapon you receive. You receive it from Will Turner. As with all weapons, you increase your skill by fighting enemies with this weapon. In addition to attack skills like Cleave and Sweep, at higher levels you can acquire the even more useful passive skills Parry and Endurance. :Upgrading the cutlass: Rusty Cutlass (Received from Will Turner): Iron Cutlass (Can be bought when cutlass level is 5): Steel Cutlass (Can be bought when cutlass level is 10): Fine Cutlass (Must complete quest when cutlass level is 15): Pirate Blade Cutlass (Must complete quest when cutlass level is 20)

The Pistol: Your first ranged weapon. The pistol can fire different types of ammo to cripple and damage different types of enemies. However it cannot be used against The Royal Navy or the East India Trading Company. Some examples include poisoning an enemy or draining a foe of all of their magic power. :Upgrading the Pistol: Single Barrel Pistol (Received from Captain Barbossa on Devil's Anvil): Double-Barrel Pistol (Can be bought from gunsmith when pistol level is 5): Triple-Barrel Pistol (Can be bought from gunsmith when pistol level is 10): Heavy Triple-Barrel Pistol (Must complete quest when pistol level is 15): Grand Pistol (Must complete quest when pistol level is 20)

The Voodoo Doll: The voodoo doll uses magic, and enemies must be attuned in order for the magic to take effect. Higher level voodoo doll players can increase the number of enemies they attune, and can also heal and cure other players. Voodoo magic allows players to plague foes with bee swarms, curses, and fire, among other things. The doll is another highly favored weapon, due to the fact that it is the only healing weapon and you can also heal your character as well through the Life Drain spell. :Upgrading the Voodoo Doll: Straw Doll (Obtain from Tia Dalma): Cloth Doll (Can be bought from Gypsy Cart when voodoo doll is level 5): Witch Doll (Can be bought from from Gypsy Cart when voodoo doll is level 10): Pirate Doll (Must complete quest when voodoo doll level is 15): Taboo Doll (Must complete quest when voodoo doll level is 20)

The Dagger: The dagger can be used at close quarters like the cutlass, or thrown at an enemy, if you buy throwing daggers from a blacksmith. :Upgrading the Dagger: Small Dagger (Obtain from Elizabeth Swann): Battle Dagger (Can be bought from blacksmith when dagger level is 5): Main Gauche (Can be bought from blacksmith when dagger level is 10): Coltello (Must complete quest when dagger level is 15): Bloodletter Dagger (Must complete quest when dagger level is 20)

Grenades: Powerful ranged bombs that can be thrown at multiple enemies for mass damage. They have a limited supply, and certain bombs set foes on fire while others blind them. Grenades have a wide area of effect, and players must make sure that they are out of the blast radius as they will also take damage. This makes the grenades one of the harder weapons to level. Buy upgrades from a gunsmith at grenade levels 5 and 10.

The Voodoo Staff: A powerful ranged staff that can target many enemies, the voodoo staff must be charged in between blast to use the full potential of it's power. Weaker shots can be fired in between charges, and the player cannot move while charging the staff for a full blast. Some spells poison groups of monsters, while others work well against certain enemies, like Banish.:Upgrading the Voodoo Staff: Cursed Staff (Obtain from Tia Dalma): Warped Staff (Can be bought from Gypsy Cart when voodoo staff level is 5): Rend Staff (Can be bought from from Gypsy Cart when voodoo staff level is 10): Harrow Staff (Must complete quest when voodoo staff level is 15): Vile Staff (Must complete quest when voodoo staff level is 20)

Special quest levels for weapons Disney has announced that quests for level 20 weapons (except grenades) will soon be added. [ [http://apps.pirates.go.com/pirates/v3/#/news/currentnews.html (September 25, 2008) "Powerful New Weapons - Coming Soon!"] ]

Gold

Players can also play parlor games for gold, and currently the games available are Poker "(Tortuga Hold'em)" and Blackjack. These games can be played against NPCs "(non-player characters)" or other online players. Currently the maximum amount of gold you can carry is 65,000.
