A reactive power control relay is an electronic device (usually microprocessor based) used to maintain power factor of a particular electrical installation. It allows user to program minimum power factor required, switches capacitor banks on and off automatically to achieve the required power factor value. It measures reactive current to be compensated via current transformer (CT).
Modern reactive power control relays comes with advanced control algorithm and self identification features that simplifies commissioning procedures. This may include automatic phase rotation detection and CT polarity detection.
