Originally designated as ATR-125, "Keosanqua" was redesignated ATA-198 on
15 May 1944 . "Keosanqua" was aMaricopa Class Auxiliary Fleet Tug ; Authorized as Rescue Ocean Tug ATR-125; Redesignated Auxiliary Fleet Tug ATA-198,15 May 1944 ; Laid down (date unknown) atLevingston Shipbuilding Co.,Orange, Texas ; Launched,17 January 1945 ; Commissioned,19 March 1945 , LT. J. L. Bean in command; Named "Keosanqua" (ATA-198),16 July 1948 .Pacific Theatre operations
Departing
Galveston, Texas ,18 April , ATA-198 steamed via thePanama Canal andSan Francisco, California , for duty in the Pacific. She reachedPearl Harbor 1 June , then continued7 June viaEniwetok andUlithi towingUSS Pegasus (IX-222) to thePhilippines . ArrivingLeyte Gulf 18 July , she departed the 21st and reachedPearl Harbor viaKwajalein 7 August . From9 August to31 October she made two towing runs toSan Francisco, California , and then resumed harbor andbarge towing duty out ofPearl Harbor . For more than 3 years she made periodic towing runs toWake Island ; to various islands in the Hawaiian chain, includingMaui andMidway Island ; and to theU.S. West Coast .Korean War operations
Renamed "Keosanqua"
16 July 1948 , she departedPearl Harbor 7 December forLong Beach, California , where she arrived22 December . Proceeding toSan Diego, California ,3 January 1949 , she commenced target towing duty with the FleetSonar School and provided harbor and coastal towing services between San Diego andLong Beach, California . On19 June 1951 , while theUnited States fought to protectSouth Korea from Communist aggression, she departed San Diego for a 10-month deployment in the westernPacific Ocean . Operating primarily out of Sasebo,Japan , "Keosanqua" providedtug service along the coast ofKorea fromMakpo toInchon . Departing Sasebo25 March , she steamed viaPearl Harbor toSan Diego, California , arriving19 April . On two subsequent deployments (26 January -30 September 1953 and7 February -2 October 1955 ) "Keosanqua" served with theU.S. 7th Fleet in the Far East, providing harbortug and target towing services out of Sasebo andYokosuka, Japan .Decommissioning
After returning from the western Pacific in
1955 , she continued operations out ofSan Diego, California , until25 May 1956 when she decommissioned and entered thePacific Reserve Fleet . Her name was struck from theNavy List 1 May 1961 . She was transferred to theRepublic of Korea and commissionedROKS Yong Mun (ATA-2) on1 February 1962 .Awards
"Keosanqua" received three
battle stars forKorean War service because of her actions in (1)United Nations Summer-Fall Offensive from 4 to8 November 1951 and (2) SecondKorea n Winter from 11 to 13 and 18 to 25 January1952 ,29 February to6 March 1952 , 9 to21 March 1952 , and24 April 1953 .References
