Bayley Hazen Military Road
- Bayley Hazen Military Road
The Bayley Hazen Military Road runs directly through the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, starting in Newbury, Vermont and proceeding 54 miles northwest to Hazens Notch near the Canadian border.
The road was built between 1760-1779. It was to have been used by General Benedict Arnold to move troops from Southern Vermont into Quebec for a proposed second assault during the later part of the American Revolution. During the war, the road was used little, but it helped shaped the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.
The road was named for Colonel Jacob Bayley, who worked on the road during the French and Indian War in 1760, and Brigadier General Moses Hazen, who continued the work 19 years later. Hundreds of men worked to construct it. The road was never actually completed according to the original plan. Hazen went on to the Siege of Yorktown.
Little evidence of the original road exists, but there have been reports of archaeologists locating isolated sections of corduroy. Some state and town roads do follow its path.
