KMAQ (AM) went on the air
August 26 ,1958 , owned and operated by the Jackson County Broadcasting Company with headquarters in Monroe, Wisconsin. One of the three partners then was Nathan L. Goets, who now, as President of Goetz Broadcasting, Inc., owns radio stations in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan. Goetz and his partners sold KMAQ to Dennis W. Voy in 1965. Voy was the station manager at the time and had started with the station as an announcer when the station first began. He assumed ownership as Maquoketa Broadcast Company in October 1, 1965. Two years later, KMAQ-FM was built, adding nighttime radio for the Maquoketa area for the first time. KMAQ (AM) would not receive nighttime power authorization until the late 80's.KMAQ from the start has had strong listenership in Jackson, Clinton and Jones County, and in some portions of Dubuque and Cedar Counties. KMAQ AM & FM, with separate programming since the early 1980s, are the only two radio stations in the local Jackson County area. There are no radio stations currently on the air in Jones or Cedar County.
KMAQ People
KMAQ has the distinction of having an all-female sales force, with the exception of its sales manager Leighton Hepker, who also serves as station manager.
KMAQ Today
KMAQ remains the area's only locally-owned and operated radio station, with no out-of-market consultant or ownership, programmed to the needs of its community. It also bears the distinction of being only a handful of radio stations across the country today with a live, local, real-time on-air staff.
