United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 12.9square mile s (33.5km² ), of which, 12.9 square miles (33.4 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.23%) is water.History
The city of Calera was incorporated in 1887, and named after the Spanish word for "limestone" for all of the limestone deposits it has in the area.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,158 people, 1,248 households, and 888 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 244.9 people per square mile (94.5/km²). There were 1,400 housing units at an average density of 108.6/sq mi (41.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 77.42% White, 19.92% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 1,248 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 13.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,650, and the median income for a family was $42,885. Males had a median income of $34,042 versus $21,750 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $16,395. About 12.2% of families and 12.5% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 15.8% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.It is currently (as of 2006 / 2007) the fastest growing city in percentage in Alabama.
