next_route=71State Route 70 is an eight-mile long
state highway in southern Shelby County,Alabama . The eastern terminus of the route is at the junction with State Route 25 at Columbiana. The western terminus of the route is at the junction with U.S. Highway 31 near Calera. The junction of US-31 and Interstate 65 at Exit 231 is less than one mile from the junction of US-31 and SR-70.The western terminus of SR-70 is approximately 25 miles south of downtown Birmingham. Until the 1990s, the route of SR-70 between Columbiana and Calera passed through a largely rural area of the county. Recently, numerous new subdivisions have been developed adjacent to the route, as the population of Shelby County has continued to grow. Besides Columbiana and Calera, SR-70 does not pass through any other incorporated communities.
