Roosevelt Street (Manhattan)
- Roosevelt Street (Manhattan)
Roosevelt Street, in the New York City borough of Manhattan, was a street which existed from the colonial period to the 1870's,running from Pearl Street at Park Row southeast to South Street.[cite web|title=The Street Necrology of Lower Manhattan |url=http://forgotten-ny.com/streetnecrology/lowermanhattannecrology/necro1.html] ]It is historically significant for its role in the New York draft riots and being the location of the New York (north) tower of the Brooklyn Bridge.
The draft riots which began on Roosevelt Street [cite web |title=Reign of the Rabble|url=http://www.ucc.uconn.edu/~pbaldwin/rabble.html] were a violent protest against the draft which began in the third year of the Civil War.
The Roosevelt Street Ferry was displaced by the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and the street itself was eliminated by the north tower of the bridge. [cite web |title="Story of the Brooklyn Bridge" |url=http://www.catskillarchive.com/rrextra/bbstory.Html]
The street was named after a Roosevelt who owned property in the area from the time of Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. It was not named after either president of the United States with that name, Teddy Roosevelt or Franklin Roosevelt.
