Total Drama Island (sometimes shortened to TDI) is a Canadian animated television series which lampoons the conventions commonly found in reality shows. The show and its sequel seasons are collectively referred to as the Total Drama series. It premiered on the Canadian cable television specialty channel Teletoon on July 8, 2007. The show was created by the creators of 6teen, another Teletoon program. It was the third Cartoon Network show outside of Adult Swim and Toonami to have the U.S. rating of "TV-PG-D", and a parental-guidance warning after every commercial break and at the beginning of the show (the first two being Sunday Pants and IGPX; its rating in Canada for most episodes is "G", or else "PG"). On the Cartoon Network airing in the United States, some content has been removed from the episodes by censors in order to keep the rating open to a younger audience; for example, putting in words instead of long bleeps, for the episodes "That's Off the Chain" and "Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon". As of now, reruns are not seen on Cartoon Network. The fourth season, Total Drama: Revenge of the Island is also shown in the same location except with a new cast.

Contents

Format

Total Drama Island is a fictional reality show that follows the competition of twenty-two teens at Camp Wawanakwa, a fictional island located in an unspecified area in Muskoka, Ontario. The campers participate in competitions to avoid being voted off the island by their fellow campers. At the end of the series, the winning contestant will win C$100,000. The competition is hosted by Chris McLean, who is assisted by the camp's chef, Chef Hatchet. At the beginning of the season, the twenty-two teen campers are placed into two groups of eleven, the "Screaming Gophers" and the "Killer Bass". In each episode, the teams participate in a challenge, in which one or more campers can win invincibility for their team. The losing team is called to the campfire at night, where they vote one of their members off the island. The camper with the most votes is eliminated from the competition. At this campfire, McLean passes out marshmallows to the campers who have not been voted off, while the one who does not get a marshmallow must walk down the Dock of Shame to the Boat of Losers, which will take them away from the island and they will "never, never, never, ever, ever, ever, come back, ever" according to Chris (this was proved a lie in "No Pain, No Game", when he brought Izzy and Eva back into the game). About halfway through the season, the teams are disbanded, after which the challenges continue; the winner of each challenge then only receives invincibility for him or herself, whereupon a camper without invincibility is voted off the island. This process of elimination continued on until two players remains on the island. These two players, Gwen and Owen, were then subject to a final contest. At the end of the season, Owen wins the competition, while Gwen wins in the alternate ending to the season. Total Drama Island is a parody of the reality show Survivor. Host Chris McLean is very similar to Survivor host Jeff Probst.[4]

There are 22 original contestants who competed in Total Drama Island. They are, Beth, Bridgette, Cody, DJ, Duncan, Eva, Ezekiel, Geoff, Gwen, Harold, Heather, Izzy, Katie, Noah, Owen, Sadie, Trent and Tyler. Owen won first place, Gwen second place and Heather in third.

Production

Total Drama Island was developed and produced by Fresh TV. The series was animated at Elliott Animation. The series was directed by Todd Kauffman and Mark Thornton of Neptoon Studios.[5] It is primarily targeted at twelve- to eighteen-year-olds, and the creators, Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch, studied what teenagers liked and disliked about reality television shows in the writing process.[6] McGillis says they used a "countrywide online research project" to determine this demographic's likes.[7] Fresh TV Inc. partners McGillis, Pertsch, Elliott and Irving produced the series.[8] The budget for the series was $8 million.[9] It was animated in Flash,[5] at Elliott Animation's studio in Toronto.[8] Every cast and crew member on Total Drama Island had to sign a confidentiality agreement not to disclose who the winner was.[10] All the characters were designed by Kauffman.[11] An early name for the series was Camp TV.[12] Voice actors from the FreshTV series 6teen have lent their voices for Total Drama Island: Christian Potenza, who played the character Jude on 6teen, played the role of host Chris McLean. Potenza said that the best part of the job was that his character could not be voted off the show.[13] Emilie-Claire Barlow plays a recurring role as Chrissy on 6teen and plays Courtney on Total Drama Island. Barlow stated that Courtney was her favorite character that she had ever played.[14] Other voice actors from 6teen include Julia Chantrey as Eva; Drew Nelson (Kai) as Duncan; Megan Fahlenbock (Jen) as Gwen; Adam Reid (Wayne) as Justin; Stephanie Anne Mills (Kirsten) as Lindsay and Katie; and Rachel Wilson (Melinda Wilson) as Heather.

Twenty-two different contestants arrive on the island to find that they will be living in a run down summer camp for eight weeks. They are divided into two teams, and they learn the rules of the competition they will be taking part in. Later, Chris announces that their first challenge, jumping off a cliff, will soon begin. 
2 "Not So Happy Campers Part 2" July 8, 2007 102
The two teams face off in their very first challenge: jumping off a thousand foot cliff into a small safe zone in shark-infested waters and building a hot tub out of materials they find in crates at the base of the cliff. As the Screaming Gophers bond rather quickly, the Killer Bass already find themselves falling apart from the start. While Courtney messes up everything for the team, she is saved when most of them find Ezekiel's sexist comments to be worse, leading to him getting voted off. 
3 "The Big Sleep" July 15, 2007 103
The two teams set out on a twenty kilometer race that wasn't actually the challenge, only to compete in a challenge to stay awake the longest. Heather forms an alliance with Lindsay and Beth, and then manipulates the Killer Bass into voting off Eva. 
4 "Dodgebrawl" July 22, 2007 104
The two teams participate in a five round game of dodgeball. The Screaming Gophers dominate at first, but then the Killer Bass have a turnaround when Duncan is awakened. Ultimately, Harold gives the Killer Bass their first win, and Noah is voted off for not contributing at all to the team. 
5 "Not Quite Famous" July 29, 2007 105
The two teams participate in a talent show and the rivalry between Heather and Gwen grows rapidly after the former reads an entry on the latter's diary about her crush on Trent. In the contest, after several strong acts and two disasters, the Bass need a miracle to win, but are able to pull it off with Harold's unexpected talent. To save herself from inevitably being voted off, Heather gets some of the other Gophers to vote off Justin. 
6 "The Sucky Outdoors" August 5, 2007 106
The two teams must spend an entire night alone in the woods in the contest for this episode. Katie and Sadie get lost, ultimately failing for their team with the former getting voted off in the process. Meanwhile, Owen and Izzy pull off a prank, which calls a bear over to the Gopher's camping area. 
7 "Phobia Factor" August 12, 2007 107
After the previous episode's elimination, a discussion of fears evolves into a fear-facing challenge thanks to some eavesdroppers. Most of the campers conquer their fear, but a few others don't fare as well. Tyler is voted off from not being able to face his fear, and for the fear in question (of chickens) being rather weak. 
8 "Up The Creek" August 19, 2007 108
The two teams take their canoes to a nearby island and build rescue fires on it. Cody manages to help Gwen and Trent bond. Unaware of the consequences, Beth picks up a cursed idol and curses their team. The Gophers lose thanks to Izzy giving advice to the other team, which leads in her elimination. 
9 "Paintball Deer Hunter" August 26, 2007 109
The two teams compete in a paintball competition with members of each team are divided into "hunters" and "deer". Beth attempts to rebel against Heather, but that only leads to the team losing. Neither Beth nor Heather are voted off, however, since Cody had gotten mauled by a bear and was voted off instead. 
10 "If You Can't Take The Heat..." September 2, 2007 110
The two teams compete in a cooking challenge. Harold's attitude towards hygiene prompts Duncan, Geoff, and DJ to constantly prank him. Meanwhile, on the other team, Heather and LeShawna's conflict reaches a boiling point when the former takes the leadership role for the challenge. In the end, the Gophers lose, and Beth is voted off after the team figures out she cursed them. 
11 "Who Can You Trust?" September 9, 2007 111
The two teams take part in a three part competition where they must put trust in their teammates. Geoff and Bridgette learn that they can easily trust each other. But DJ loses his pet and trust in his best friend, Geoff. Duncan reveals his soft side to Courtney. Sadie is voted off after the Killer Bass lose, partly due to repeatedly hitting Courtney as part of the challenge even after the challenge ended. 
12 "Basic Straining" September 16, 2007 112
Chef forces the teams to go through several difficult obstacles designed to make the campers quit. Duncan provokes him enough to be sent to "The Boathouse", where he hooks up with Courtney. Afterwards, the Bass lose, and Harold rigs the votes to vote out Courtney for revenge on Duncan's various pranks through this episode and the last. 
13 "X-Treme Torture" September 23, 2007 113
Chris has the contestants paired off for the next immunity contest, a series of Extreme Sports Challenges. Harold is voted off for getting distracted in the tie-breaker after seeing Heather's breasts, but manages to confess his love for LeShawna before he leaves. 
14 "Brunch of Disgustingness" September 30, 2007 114
The two teams are divided up with the guys on one team and the girls on the other. They must eat many varieties of disgusting food in order to win an awesome prize. Ultimately, Owen wins for the guys, but the challenge didn't have an elimination anyway. 
15 "No Pain, No Game" October 7, 2007 115
The two teams are officially dissolved and two campers that were previously eliminated, Izzy and Eva, return to the game. The campers then face an excruciating torture challenge with individual immunity at stake for the first time. LeShawna wins the challenge, while Eva is voted off right on her return for her temper. 
16 "Search And Do Not Destroy" October 14, 2007 116
The remaining campers are off on a scavenger hunt for keys, and Heather manages to frame Trent in an effort for getting him and Gwen to break up. LeShawna convinces everyone to vote for either Trent or Heather, yet the latter gets invincibility. Trent is voted off as a result. 
17 "Hide and Be Sneaky" October 21, 2007 117
The campers play an extreme game of Hide and Seek with Chef who hunts them down one by one with a huge water gun. Duncan starts an alliance with the other three remaining guys. LeShawna and Heather win invincibility for winning the challenge and finding a hidden person respectively. Meanwhile, the new Guys Alliance votes off Bridgette, due to her athletic skills and kind personality. 
18 "That's Off the Chain!" October 28, 2007 118
The final nine compete in a bike-themed race challenge. Lindsay finally leaves Heather's alliance, but is automatically eliminated due to failing the challenge from a technicality. 
19 "Hook, Line, and Screamer" November 4, 2007 119
The campers go through a challenge where they are stalked by a psycho killer to see who can last the longest. Gwen gets the win for finding and defeating a real killer, but DJ is eliminated for running away from someone (Heather in a mud mask) who isn't a killer. 
20 "Wawanakwa Gone Wild!" November 11, 2007 120
The campers square off in a challenge where they must trap a specific animal they get. Gwen wins invincibility while Duncan and Heather set up a temporary alliance. Izzy is voted off for her mental instability after shooting Chef and Heather with a tranquilizer dart. 
21 "Trial by Tri-Armed Triathlon" November 18, 2007 121
The six remaining campers are split into three teams of two and must compete in various challenges using teamwork. Some groups have trouble working together, while Gwen and Geoff start a friendship. Once the triathlon is finished and all three teams tie, nobody gets the immunity. However, Geoff is voted off for his niceness. 
22 "Haute Camp-Ture" November 25, 2007 122
The host goes to Playa Des Losers, and here, the former contestants get a chance to talk about the final five. The host then makes a shocking revelation: The eliminated campers will be voting the next camper off. With a chain started by Katie and Sadie, LeShawna is voted off due to a rule placed by Chris. 
23 "Camp Castaways" December 2, 2007 123
After a huge flood, the campers float away to a "deserted island" and try to fend for themselves while dealing with the dangers there, as well as enduring each other. Meanwhile, the hosts are having a day of relaxation on the same island. While the four campers are separated at first, they eventually wind up back together again. Before reuniting with the others, Owen undergoes a mental breakdown and starts imagining a coconut as a real person. Due to this, the coconut is voted off. 
24 "Are We There, Yeti?" December 9, 2007 124
The campers are stuck in the middle of the woods. The challenge, hosted by Chef since Chris is gone, is to race back to camp and tag a totem pole, with the remaining four contestants divided by gender. Owen loses his chance at winning due to his eating habits, and Duncan is voted off by Chef's decision, since he liked Owen more. 
25 "I Triple Dog Dare You!" December 16, 2007 125
The three remaining campers participate in a series of dares that were made up by the eliminated campers. Owen and Gwen make a temporary alliance against Heather, but it's a dare by Lindsay and a technical loophole that ends in Heather getting automatically eliminated from the game.

The final two campers participate in one last challenge for the grand prize, with all of previously eliminated campers watching and contributing. With the help of Izzy, Owen gets the win and Gwen is eliminated. 
Sp "Total Drama, Drama, Drama, Drama Island" November 29, 2008 Special
After a decision from Owen, Chris has all twenty two campers go out for a hunt for a million dollars. However, a large chain of events lead to the prize getting eaten and fourteen of the contestants tieing. Chris then declares that the people who tied will compete in the series's second season, Total Drama Action. 

Reception

Total Drama Island has received positive reviews. Carole Bonneau, the Vice President of programming of Teletoon Canada stated that Total Drama Island, along with FreshTV's 6TEEN were "consistently top performers" for audiences of ages 6-11, and also helped to bring in older viewers as well.[16] When Total Drama Island aired on the American Cartoon Network, it performed very well; The Toronto Star reported that, "in some ages groups [Total Drama Island showed] a 500 per cent ratings increase in [its] time slot."[7] On December 11, 2008, Total Drama Island garnered 3.5 million viewers.[17] That year, the series was the top "regularly scheduled Thursday night program at 9 p.m. on all television throughout third quarter among boys 2-11, 6-11 and 9-14," according to the Animation World Network.[18] On Memorial Day weekend of 2009, a marathon of Total Drama Island increased viewership in age groups 2-11, 6-11, and 9-14, each by 20% or more compared to the same week in 2008.[19] Commonsense Media gave the show 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a "[c]lever cartoon reality show spoof OK for older tweens".[20] Not all reviews have been positive. Debi Enker of The Age gave a negative review of the season's last episode, calling the art and design and writing "lamentable."[21] The series was nominated for a Gemini Award for "Best Animated Program or Series", shared by Tom McGillis, Jennifer Pertsch, George Elliott and Brian Irving.[22] As of 2011, Total Drama Island has aired in over 188 countries.[23]

Media

DVD releases

A DVD was released by Cartoon Network on August 18, 2009 in the United States. It contains all of the 27 episodes (including TDI Rundown) of season one of this series in a 4 disc set, being 594 minutes long. In addition, its bonus features (entitled as X-tras) are the audition tapes of twenty campers, as well as Izzy's second audition tape and her exclusive interview with Chris. In Australia, Total Drama Island is on Region 4 DVD as separate volumes. This series of discs contains the widescreen version with uncut scenes and original dialogue, as seen on Teletoon. In reviewing the DVD for season, Matthew Price of The Oklahoman wrote that while the show started out "unbelievably slowly," the series became more interesting as campers began getting voted off. Price also praised the parody of reality shows.[24] In another review of the DVD, Jeffrey Kauffman of DVD Talk wrote that the character development was compelling and that the parody of reality shows were very funny.[25] Mac McEntire of DVD Verdict praised the character development as well, but noted that the show sometimes sinks to "lowbrow gross-outs".[26] Both Kauffman and McEntire recommended the series DVD.

Total Drama Island Interactive

Total Drama Island Interactive was an online game marketed in conjunction with the television series. It is produced by Xenophile Media. By registering a free account, the player could play games using a customizable avatar to earn points for marshmallows. Marshmallows are used as money in the game so the player can buy in-game items. The player who earned the most points had their avatar make a cameo appearance in the season finale.[27] The games were based on the challenges in the show.[28] Total Drama Island Interactive was nominated for an Interactive Emmy Award in 2007.[27]
