Location

Located on the Kancheepuram - Vandavasi state highway 116, the village is 110 kilometres (68 mi) from the state capital, Chennai. It is serviced by regular buses from Kancheepuram and Vandavasi.

History

Thennangur was previously known as Dakshina Halasyam, Sanskrit for a place where the wise drink nectar. According to Hindu mythology, the Hindu goddess Meenakshi was found as a three year old child by the Pandya king here.

The settlement was centred around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, which has now deteriorated. Only a pillar remains. Without a temple, the village virtually vanished.

Thennangur was given a rebirth when His Holiness Sri Haridoss Giri Swamigal, The Chief Disciple of Sri Gnananandha Giri Swamigal chose the village for the location of a new centre to study Namasankeerthanam.[1]
