Charles Waterhouse "Chip" Goodyear V (born 18 January 1958) is part of the Goodyear lumber and railway family of New York and Pennsylvania.[1][2]

He is a Yale graduate with a science degree in geology & geophysics and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He rowed on the lightweight crew team at Yale. He is a Member of the National Petroleum Council and International Council on Mining and Metals.[3]

Career

Chip Goodyear was previously chief executive officer of BHP Billiton, the world’s largest diversified resources company. He joined BHP as chief financial officer (1999–2001), served as chief development officer (2001–03), appointed CEO (2003) and retiring from the position on 30 September 2007 and BHP Group on 1 January 2008.[4]

Goodyear helped to grow a debt-ridden BHP company in 1999 into the world's largest miner via a merger with South Africa's Billiton (2001); then through further acquisitions, corporate restructuring and benefitting from a commodities boom, BHP Billiton's market capitalisation grew from US$12 billion to about US$200 billion by the time he left nine years later.

Prior to BHP, he was President of Goodyear Capital Corporation and Executive Vice President & CFO of Freeport-McMoRan. Goodyear began his career as an investment banker at Wall Street brokerage, Kidder Peabody, advising companies on mergers, acquisitions and financing.

On 6 February 2009, Temasek Holdings announced his appointment as a board member and CEO-Designate, to commence on 1 March 2009, succeeding Ho Ching from 1 October 2009.[5] He was identified as a possible candidate for the top office in Temasek in 2007, when the Temasek board began reviewing internal and external CEO candidates since early 2005. Goodyear would have been the first foreigner to run the Singaporean sovereign fund company.[6]

On 21 July 2009, the Temasek board and Goodyear announced that they had mutually agreed that he would not be taking over as CEO, citing differences in opinions on strategy. Instead, Ho Ching continued in the position, while Goodyear stepped down on 15 August 2009.[7]

Karl was a Commando who wanted to return to his regiment as he thought ( 3 weeks before he died) that he was safer in Afghanistan fighting then at the BHP Billiton mine. He was a loyal Australian and a Top soldier who was willing to risk his life for both Australia and the USA. A request for a foundation in Karl's name was refused by Mr. Goodyear who has no interest in this.
