USS "Bastion" (ACM-6) was a "Chimo"-class
minelayer in theUnited States Navy duringWorld War II ."Bastion" was originally the "Colonel Henry J. Hunt"--a mine planter built in 1942 at
Point Pleasant ,West Virginia , by the Marietta Manufacturing Co.—and was acquired by the Navy from theU.S. Army on4 January 1945 ; renamed USS Bastion; converted to an auxiliary minelayer; and commissioned atCharleston, South Carolina , on9 April 1945 , Lt. Earl D. Fatkin,USNR , in command.World War II Pacific Theatre operations
"Bastion" departed
Charleston, South Carolina , on17 June 1945 bound for the Pacific. She transited thePanama Canal on23 June and arrived inSan Diego, California , on7 July . In August, she sailed toPearl Harbor and then continued on to theMariana Islands where she arrived on22 August . Though classified as a minelayer, the ship served as a minesweeper and repair ship in theMarianas during the remainder of August and all of September and in theRyukyus from October to mid December. On the17 December , she got underway forJapan , arrived there on the 21st, and resumed minesweeping duties. She also provided seaborne support for the occupation forces.Decommissioning
On
11 March 1946 , "Bastion" headed home. She was decommissioned on18 June 1946 atSan Francisco, California , and was simultaneously transferred to theU.S. Coast Guard . Her name was struck from theNavy list on19 July 1946 .References
