USS "Cardinal" (AM-6) was a "Lapwing"-class minesweeper in the
United States Navy . She was named after the cardinal."Cardinal" was launched
29 March 1918 byStaten Island Shipbuilding Co.,New York ; sponsored by Miss I. Nelson; and commissioned23 August 1918 , Lieutenant (junior grade) N. Drake in command.East Coast operations
"Cardinal" served in the
3rd Naval District , sweeping waters offNew York and serving as a temporary lightship, until3 August 1919 , when she sailed to join theU.S. Pacific Fleet .Pacific Ocean deployment
For the next 3 years, she sailed out of
San Diego, California andSan Pedro, California , carrying supplies, provisions and passengers along theCalifornia coast, and towing lighters, targets, and disabled ships. From8 February 1923 to16 April , "Cardinal" sailed to thePanama Canal to provide tug services during fleetbattle practice. She returned to San Pedro, California to prepare for duty inAlaska n waters, and on23 May sailed forPort Angeles, Washington , where she called from30 May to1 June .Trapped on a reef
While bound for
Dutch Harbor on6 June she grounded on areef off the east coast ofChirikof Island , and heavy flooding began immediately. Some of her men were landed on the island, where they were later taken off by a Coast and Geodetic Survey ship. The rest were rescued from the battered "Cardinal" on7 June by USS|Cuyama|AO-3, who also took off salvageable material and stores.References
