History

Stone Middle School opened in 1991. It is a school for middle school students- 7th and 8th grade.[1] Stone is named after famous astronomer Ormond Stone, who lived in Centreville. The school is located near Stone Road (also named after Ormond Stone) on Sully Park Drive.

Academics

The school requires four core classes (Math, Science, History, and English) and P.E. for each student. Also, students can choose up to four electives. However, some electives are only for a semester instead of a full year, in which case a student may take more electives.

The school offers a Choral, Band, Orchestra, and Theater program as part of its electives. Robert Zazzara heads the Band program while Mark Taylor heads the Orchestral program. Stephen Kogut heads the Choral program, while Lois Walsh heads the Theater program. Every year, Walsh puts on a Winter musical production, starring students who first audition for the production. The school has done such productions as The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, and Godspell. The 2006-7 school year marked the first year in which two productions (Wizard of Oz and Godspell) were done.

The school allocates the rest of its time to two brief periods: Panther Block (PB), and Sustained Silent Reading (SSR). During PB (also called TA), teachers check students' S.T.A.R. cards, deliver character education lessons, help students with organization, or teach Read to Succeed lessons. In addition to Panther Block, the school has daily fifteen minute universal sustained silent reading time at the beginning of fourth period. Students can also be seen cleaning up grounds, taking study hall or playing in musical ensembles.

Stone Middle School has traditional scheduling on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, and block scheduling on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Structure

Stone Middle School has the same design as Franklin Middle School, a middle school located in Chantilly, Virginia. It has two floors; the first floor has a cafeteria, gymnasium and stage, and auditorium in addition to Fine Arts classes and 8th grade classes. The second floor hosts 7th grade classes and the Science wing.

The school has two parking lots: one is located in front of the school and the other is located next to the school, where drop-off and pick-up occurs. Additionally, the school has public, outdoor basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, tracks, and tennis courts for use and an indoor gym facility with basketball courts. Sports organizations in the area frequently use the school to host games and tournaments.

Moreover, the school has six trailer facilities, four hosting the Foreign Language department and the other two occasionally hosting detention.

In April 2008, several rooms had their carpeting replaced with tile, and existing carpeting replaced with new. The carpeting that was replaced had been there since Stone began operation.

Demographics

Of 965+ students (2006–2007), Ormond Stone Middle School demographics are (as of 2006) 66% White, 8% Black, 16% Asian, 10% Hispanic.

Originally, Stone had over 1,000 students, feeding mainly to Chantilly High School, with a smaller amount feeding into Centreville High School in Clifton, Virginia. The addition of Westfield High School in Chantilly, Virginia, has led to redistricting, thus Stone's population dipped under the 1,000 mark.

Teams

Stone students are put on one of eight teams, four for each grade:

  • 7th grade teams - Comets, Astros, and the Shooting Stars
  • 8th grade teams - Starbursts, Milky Ways, and the Cosmos
  • Supernovas is a combined 7th/8th grade team.

Each team has separate teachers for the Math, Science, English, and History program, but shares teachers for the Foreign Language, Fine Arts, and Physical Education programs.

Technology

Stone has 502 computers, including 2 computer labs, and 2 mobile labs. There is one computer lab located on each floor in the school. The school also has a website [1], which is currently managed by 7th and 8th grade math and science teacher Juliana West.

Feeder schools

Stone is fed by Virginia Run Elementary School, Cub Run Elementary School, Deer Park Elementary School, London Towne Elementary School, and Bull Run Elementary School. Stone feeds in to Westfield High School in Chantilly, Virginia, but students can opt to go to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology via successful application or Centreville High School for Spanish immersion programs.
