USS "Starling" (AM-64) was an "Auk"-class minesweeper acquired by the
U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the water to prevent ships from passing."Starling" was named after the
starling , which is any passerine bird of the genusSturnus or of the family,Sturnidae . The second "Starling" to be so named by the Navy, "AM-64" was laid down on1 July 1941 by theGeneral Engineering and Drydock Co.,Alameda, California ; launched on11 April 1942 ; and commissioned on21 December 1942 .World War II Pacific operations
After fitting out and a short shakedown period, "Starling" sortied from
San Francisco, California , on22 January 1943 with aconvoy bound forHawaii and arrived atPearl Harbor on1 February . On16 April , she sailed for the South Pacific. From25 April to early July, the minesweeper shuttled betweenFiji ,Samoa ,New Zealand , theNew Hebrides , andNew Caledonia . She escorted aconvoy fromNoumea toGuadalcanal on2 July and, from the 5th to the 16th, patrolled in theSolomon Islands betweenLunga andTulagi . She then resumed interisland convoy duty which occupied her until mid-October. "Starling", with Dash (AM-88) and Constant (AM-86), sweptFerguson Passage offKolombangara from 23 to27 October , and they destroyed 135 mines. From,29 October to1 November , they cleared the minefield inKula Gulf and then sweptVella Gulf from 3 to6 November . "Starling" next sailed forNew Zealand and arrived atAuckland on30 November 1943 . "Starling" resumedconvoy duty until10 May 1944 , when she was assigned to assist in transporting the 5th Amphibious Corps from theGuadalcanal staging area. This was the Southern Attack Force for the amphibious assault againstGuam . Later in the month, the force held practice landings offCape Esperance and finally departed on4 June for theMarshall Islands . The minesweeper leftKwajalein on17 July with Task Group (TG) 53.9, the Minesweeping and Hydrographic Unit, forGuam . She performedantisubmarine and patrol duty and remained in theMarianas until sailing forEniwetok on19 September . "Starling" steamed fromEniwetok toHawaii and departedPearl Harbor on7 October for theU.S. West Coast and a yard overhaul. She arrived atSan Francisco, California on14 October 1944 and remained on the west coast until1 February 1945 when she sailed, viaPearl Harbor , for theMarshall Islands . The minesweeper arrived in theMarshall Islands on28 February and was assigned to Minesweeper Group I, TG 52.4, for the invasion of theRyukyus . She operated offOkinawa from6 April to4 May and then sailed for thePhilippines . FromLeyte , the ship moved toIwo Jima and back toOkinawa which she reached on18 August , three days after hostilities ended. "Starling" swept mines in theChu Shan Archipelago , off theChina coast, from7 September to30 October before calling atShanghai . She sailed from that port on17 November forJapan and arrived at Sasebo,Japan , two days later. The ship operated in Japanese waters until28 December 1945 when she steamed for the U.S. west coast viaSaipan ,Eniwetok ,Johnston Island , andPearl Harbor . She arrived atPearl Harbor on5 February 1946 and atSan Diego, California , nine days later.Decommissioning
"Starling" was placed in reserve, out of commission, on
15 May 1946 . In October 1948, she was towed to a berthing area atLong Beach, California . On7 February 1955 , the ship was reclassified MSF-64. She was struck from theNavy list on1 July 1972 and sold to the government ofMexico on16 February 1973 . She serves theMexican Navy as "Valentin Gomez Farias" (G-11).Awards
