History
Organized in 1870, the Parish is named for
Simon Cameron , aPennsylvania n who was PresidentAbraham Lincoln 's first secretary of war.Cameron Parish was devastated by
Hurricane Audrey on June 27, 1957, causing over 390 deaths, and then again byHurricane Rita on September 24, 2005, although the latter storm caused no deaths.Geography

There were 5,336 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the parish was 93.65% White, 3.88% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 2.15% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 11.57% reported speaking French orCajun French at home, while 1.83% speak Spanish. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.21.In the parish the population was spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who were 65 years of age or older.
