Cameron is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the parish seat of Cameron Parish, Louisiana, United States.GR|6 The population was 1,965 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lake Charles Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

In 1957, Cameron was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Audrey. A storm surge of 12 feet (3.6 m) and 150 mile per hour (240 km/h) winds caused the death of more than 300 residents of the town. [cite web | author=Bob Henson | title=Hurricane Audrey (August 19, 1998 Broadcast) | work=The Weather Notebook | url=http://www.weathernotebook.org/transcripts/1998/08/19.html | accessmonthday=September 28 | accessyear=2005 ]

Nearly fifty years later, in late September 2005, Hurricane Rita destroyed 90 percent of the homes in the parish seat. This time, however, virtually everyone evacuated, and no one was killed in the town. [cite news | title=Rita ravages region near state line | date=2005-09-26 | publisher=CNN | The town of Cameron was devastated (sic) by a wave of tornadoes, before the actual hurricane hit land. Subsequently, this did most of the damage to the town. A convert|19|ft|m|sing=on water sure followed. Shortly after, a Forest Service Interagancy Management Team was asked to assist,(Sexton) for the purpose of running a base camp to provide housing to all federal-agency first responders related to the recovery effort. This task was relieved to Fire CRWB (crew boss) Justin Woolf, who assumed command 3 days later. The recovery effort was extensive, and is still going. Many agencies contributed to the relief efforts, including the National Guard, Firefighters (West Virginia, Oregon), EMT personnel, and law enforcement. Many resources were tasked for recovery aid, from various parts of the country. The Army Corps. of Engineers also assisted, along with various local groups including private water, electrical, and phone companies. The Cameron Parish is a very strong, close community, with a very optimistic attitude. theofurl=http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/09/25/rita/index.html]

Hurricane Ike again leveled Cameron just as it was recovering from Rita in 2005. Currently Cameron is only accessable for residents to clean up. Once noted for it's location next to Lake Calcasieu and the Gulf of Mexico as a fishing destination the bays and bayous around the town are filled with gas slicks and sewege sludge.
