- Louisiana Highway 1141
Louisiana Highway 1141 is a
state highway inCameron, Louisiana . It lasts 1.5 miles and connects the East Bank Calcascieu Ship Channel withLouisiana Highway 27 .This road was part of the original highway along the Louisiana Gulf Coast before the Calcasieu Ship Channel was constructed.
The majority of this state highway connects to no other road as it is situated on Monkey Island, an artificially created island situated between the ship channel and a bend in the Calcasieu River (for which the ship channel provides a cut off). The Louisiana DOTD operated a ferry for the few residents that lived on the island, and to connect LA 1141 to the mainland. This ferry service caused controversy in the mid-1990s when several state legislators complained about this expenditure of public funds which benefited very few people. In 2005, Hurricane Rita destroyed all structures on the island and displaced its residents, which led to the end (for now) of ferry operations.
