- Calumet Trail
The Calumet Trail is an east-west
bicycle and multiuse recreationaltrail in northwesternIndiana 's Calumet region, running roughly parallel to US 12 and the right-of-way of the South Shore line, along theNIPSCO easement. It runs for about 9.1 miles from Mineral Springs Road inChesterton, Indiana , to a point by the county line of Porter County and LaPorte County, very close to the parking lot entrance of a localsand dune landmark, Mount Baldy. The surface is of crushedlimestone and is frequently used by cyclists and joggers in the warmer months. Deer and otherwildlife are often seen along the trail, which loosely connects with other bicycle/multiuse trails in northwestern Indiana in a loose arc from near theIllinois state line to near theMichigan state line, bringing trail users in proximity to theIndiana Dunes National Lakeshore and theIndiana Dunes State Park .
