Onesimo Makani Kabweza

Onesimo Makani Kabweza

Onesimo Makani Kabweza, (b. 1939; d. April 27, 1993) was the late editor of Moto Magazine in Zimbabwe. He was one of the first Zimbabwean journalists to break the “culture of silence” which followed the country’s independence in 1980.

Onesimo was a Malawian by birth but spent much of his life in Zimbabwe. Onesimo is known for daring to take a critical stand against the new Zimbabwean government under Robert Mugabe at a time when others were too scared to criticise or speak out against any government wrongdoing. He was very enthusiastic about the need for southern African media workers to unify. He was editor of Moto from 1987 until his death in a car crash on April 27 1993 on his way back from a trip to Harare on Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) business.
