History

A private 501(c)(3) non-profit public transportation company, CRT was established in November, 2003. In 2003, it provided nearly 60,000 trips a year. In 2008, it provided about 200,000 trips annually.[citation needed]

Funding of close to $3 million have been spent locally.[clarification needed] Community contributions come from towns, hospitals, human service agencies, businesses and individuals; these contributions leverage committed government awards from the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Medicaid, and area[clarification needed] human service agencies.[citation needed]

In 2004, VTrans selected CRT along with other transportation providers in Vermont to develop a fully coordinated transportation system; and to develop procedures to ensure that all services are open to the general public, and are carefully designed and managed to meet the needs of residents and visitors including employees, job seekers, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, in the most flexible and cost-effective manner.[citation needed]

In March 2005 the CRT Board of Directors authorized a steering committee to perform a Site Feasibility Study. The committee looked at approximately 30 sites region-wide. This group consisted of representatives from the Southern Windsor County Regional Planning Commission, the Windham Regional Commission, The Vermont Agency of Transportation, The Connecticut River Transit BOD[clarification needed] and Staff. The recommended site was acquired in January 2008, and construction started in September 2008.[citation needed]
