Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group
- Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group
The Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group (BMSG) is a volunteer organization run by breastfeeding mothers. Its mission is to increase the incidence and duration of breastfeeding, for the promotion of better health in Singapore.
History
The Singapore Breastfeeding Mothers' Group (SBMG) was set up in 1975 as an Advisory Committee under the Consumers' Association of Singapore (CASE). Mrs Rosemary Chen was the first President. In 1989, CASE was restructured, which triggered SBMG to be an independent society, which meant the organization became a voluntary, non-profit group with no funding from anywhere except from the members. Breastfeeding Mothers' Support Group (Singapore) - BMSG(S) - was registered on January 19, 1991.
Activities
BMSG pushed for a free hotline number in early 1990s for mothers to seek help in breastfeeding. The hotline is still operational, operated by volunteer counsellors, answering on average 3,500 phone calls annually.
BMSG offered counsellor training for its members who are committed to volunteer themselves in operating the hotline.
BMSG also held various activities, from fundraising, gathering, and campaigning for the cause of breastfeeding in Singapore.
