Jesus College, Oxford is one of the constituent colleges of theUniversity of Oxford . Its alumni include politicians, lawyers, bishops, poets, and academics. Some alumni went on to become Fellows of the college; 14 students later became Principal of the college. The college was founded in 1571 by Queen Elizabeth I, at the request of a Welsh clergyman, Hugh Price. There are still strong links withWales , with about 15% of students being from Wales. Phillips is the recipient of letters from one of the characters, Jery Melford. There is no evidence that Phillips was based on any Jesus individual, but others named in Melford's letters (Griffy Price, Gwyn, Mansel, Basset and "our old friend Barton") may be based on men attending Jesus College in the 1720s and 1730s.
