- List of Honorary Fellows of Jesus College, Oxford
The Governing Body of
Jesus College, Oxford (one of the constituent colleges of theUniversity of Oxford ) has the ability to elect "distinguished persons" to Honorary Fellowships.Statute IV "The Fellows", clause 23 "Honorary Fellowships"] Under the current statutes of the college, Honorary Fellows cannot vote at meetings of the Governing Body and do not receive financial reward. They can be called upon, however, to help make recommendations as part of a committee where it is proposed to dismiss members of academic staff as redundant, or to dismiss or discipline members of academic staff for reasons for performance or behaviour, or to dismiss the Principal from office. [Statute V "The Academic Staff", clauses 11, 16, 29 and 42]In total, eighty-two people have been elected as Honorary Fellows. All but one – the journalist and broadcaster
Francine Stock – have been men. Three former Principals of the College (John Christie, Sir John Habakkuk and Sir Peter North) have been elected Honorary Fellows on retirement – the other Principals of the college since Honorary Fellowships were introduced (Ernest Hardy,Alfred Hazel and Sir Frederick Ogilvie) died in office. Thirteen Honorary Fellows have been former Fellows of the college, some (for example,Ellis Evans , Jesus Professor of Celtic) being elected on retirement, some (for example, Sir Goronwy Edwards) when resigning their fellowship to take up an academic post elsewhere and some (for example, Robert Steel) being elected many years after leaving, to mark their later achievements. Of the other Honorary Fellows, sixty-four wereOld Member s of the college (six of these being Old Members and former Fellows) and one (Arthur Jolliffe ) had lectured at the college without being a Fellow. The remaining seven Honorary Fellows had no previous academic connection with the college before their election. Jesus College has had strong links with
Wales since its establishment in 1571, and many of these Honorary Fellows have been distinguished Welshmen. The Welsh politicianDavid Lloyd George was elected to an Honorary Fellowship in 1910 when he wasChancellor of the Exchequer . He wrote to Sir John Rhys, the Principal at the time, to thank the college for the honour, saying:The first three Honorary Fellows, all former students of the college, were elected in October 1877: John Rhys, the first
Jesus Professor of Celtic who was later an Offical Fellow (1881–1895) and Principal (1895–1915); the historianJohn Richard Green , and the poet Lewis Morris.Baker, "VCH"] Honorary Fellows have been elected in every decade since then, although the number elected has varied: only two were elected in the 1880s, the 1900s and the 1920s, whereas twelve were elected in the 1960s and twenty-one in the 1990s. The college noted in 1998 that the number of Honorary Fellows of the college was markedly below the average of other Oxford colleges and it adopted a more methodical approach to increase numbers. [cite journal|year=1998/1999|title=Fellows' News| journal=JCR|pages=12|last=De'Ath|first=John] Seven Honorary Fellows were elected that year, followed by another five in 1999. A further seven have been elected since then, the most recent election (of William Boyd,Keith Burnett and Francine Stock) taking place in 2007. The college's Honorary Fellows have included two Old Members who later became Prime Minister of their respective countries:Norman Washington Manley , who studied at Jesus College as aRhodes Scholar and who was Chief Minister of Jamaica from 1955 to 1962, andHarold Wilson , who was twice British Prime Minister (1964–1970 and 1974–1976).
