South Lake High School

South Lake High School is a school in Groveland, Florida and one of seven public high schools in Lake County. The school serves Groveland, Clermont, Mascotte, Minneola, and other cities in South Lake County.

History

South Lake High School was a combination of two now-defunct rival schools: Clermont High School and Groveland High School. The Clermont Highlanders and the Groveland Greenbacks were consolidated to form one institution. The school started operation in August 1993, with its graduating class of 1997 being the first class to have attending all four academic years at the new facility. Despite the high school's considerably larger size in contrast to the two aforementioned institutions that it replaced, the new school quickly suffered from overcrowding and need for expansion because of the tremendous growth in the South Lake County and surrounding areas near the turn of the millennium. As such, it's little sister school East Ridge High School was built within the Clermont city limits in 2002 to help offset the overcrowding.

chool Grounds

The School has a relatively large campus for it's area. The main building is a two story structure containing grades 10th though 12th. The front campus has a single story auditorium and gym containing a dance room, weight room, and a basketball/vollyball court. There is also a combined building, which was converted from the old cafeteria to house the culinary and ROTC programs. The back of the campus houses the 9th grade-center, a two story building constructed in 2007, where the freshmen spend most of their first year of high school. And the portables, two tennis courts, track, and football field and stadium.

South Lake High School started out with approximately 1100 students, 700 from Clermont and 400 from Groveland. The school has grown to about 1,800 students.

The Florida Department of Education gave the school a "D" rating in the 2007 school year. It had a C rating in 2006 and 2005, and a D in 2004.

NJROTC

Navy JROTC. The school's NJROTC program received and currently holds the honor of Unit Achievement and Distinguished Unit, earned by their cadets during the 2007-2008 school year. The school's ROTC program is ranked as one of the top 8 in the state. With approximately 150 cadets, the unit is divided up into three companies:
-Alpha
-Bravo
-Charlie

The program has an orienteering team, an academics team, a color guard, and an athletics team. It also has four drill teams which include:
