Hallingskarvet National Park is a national park in the municipalities Hol (Buskerud), Ulvik (Hordaland) and Aurland (Sogn og Fjordane), established by the government 22 December 2006 [ [http://www.dep.no/md/norsk/tema/naturvern/nyheter/022031-070289/dok-bn.html Hallingskarvet National Park established] no icon] . More exactly the park covers the Hallingskarvplateau and the high mountain areas in the west, including Vargebreen and Såtedalen, further it covers Lengjedalen, Ynglesdalen and parts of Raggsteindalen.

The national park covers 450 km² in the mountain range Hallingskarvet, and hosts large stocks of wild reindeer, important for the establishment of the park.

The highest point in the national park is Folarskardnuten, of elevation 1,933 m.

Hallingskarvet is very characteristic for this landscape, as it took multiple ice ages to shape it like it is today. The area shows the geological history, and the connection between this history and the variation in the species living there. Valuable areas with special values and threatened or vulnerable species like for instance Draba cacuminum and lanceleaf grapefern (Botrychium lanceolatum).

Protection and use

The main objective of this national park is to preserve a large, unique and largely untouched area in order to protect the landscape and the biological plurality with its ecosystem, species and populations of amongst others the wild reindeer. The protection is designed to safeguard a characteristic element needed to understand the geological history of the norwegian landscape. It is also designed to protect valuable elements of the cultural heritage.

The park is open to the traditional forms of outdoor activities which require little or no technical means.
